Church Interior Design - Basic Design Elements
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedIn the Christian world we revere our churches. Have you ever been to church, whether as a regular worshiper or for a special occasion like a child’s christening or a wedding, and looked around and marveled at the interior decorations. I bet you have!
Most Christian churches are very much decorated in a similar manner with religious paintings and plaques adorning the walls and beautiful stained glass windows depicting scenes from the bibles.
Did you know that back in Medieval times a church would often get ransacked and robbed for its stained glass windows, which at the time were considered to be valuable treasures. These days a churches stained glass windows are still very much an important part of church interior design but they are hardly considered to be treasures, even though stained glass windows can get very expensive to repair or replace.
One other feature of a typical church interior design you would have probably noticed is a series of paintings or plaques known as ‘Stations of the Cross’. This series of pictures tell you Christ’s story. One of the pictures is of Jesus carrying his cross and another one is of Jesus on the cross. These pictures are shown in order.
There are 14 Stations of the Cross and the first is titled “Jesus is condemned to death” and that image shows the Romans condemning Jesus to death. These Stations of the Cross can also be in the form of stained glass windows that line the church but more often than not, are shown in the form of elaborate plaques or paintings that hang on the wall. These are very common forms of typical church interior designs.
The Bread and the Wine
Another common church interior design feature is the altar which is usually made out of marble. Other churches can have their altars made from timber but the majority of Christian church altars are marble. You will never see a christian church without an altar. Another critical piece of church interior design is the ‘tabernacle’. The tabernacle is the structure in which the bread and wine used for the holy communion is stored. Often these tabernacles are very elaborate with beautiful carvings while others are simple boxes.
Of course you could not forget an imperative church interior design feature being the seats (commonly referred to as pews) in which the worshipers sit. A pew is a long timber bench that normally has a padded place to kneel at the foot of it.
So the next time you are in church why not take a little time to have a look around and check out the church interior design as you are sure to be impressed with what you see.
